Joe,
I had not intended to write to anyone. But your site was just one that I felt that you might find my story interesting. It is actually more personal. Back in the late '60s my father was the President of the State Western Riding Club Assn. and the head of the Days of '47 Rodeo. Each year they were mandated to provide a Western hero for the Rodeo. Besides many, like The Rifleman, Roy Rogers, etc. He had The Lone Ranger one year. Things were much less formal in those days and he would pick the celebrity up at the airport and bring them home before going to a hotel. My Mother was a bit quiet and shy and didn't ever really ask for much, but when The Lone Ranger arrived she was thrilled. He explained to her that when not wearing his mask, he was to be introduced and/or referred to as his real name. But then when in Mask, he was NOT to be referred to by anything other than the Lone Ranger, or Ranger. On his first day here, she asked him if she could have one of his Silver Bullet's. He explained that he was not really allowed to give them away. She understood. He was here for the week, and on the last day, my Father, Mother and the Ranger were on their way to the airport. As he gave my Mother a little hug and Thank you, goodbye, he pressed something into her hand and left. When she opened it up it was a Silver Bullet that said "Lone Ranger" on it in Script font writing. Nothing was ever said about it, and it was years before she even told anyone as she thought he had given it to her secretly because he knew he could trust her to keep it quiet. Who Knows! Maybe he got permission from someone, or just wanted to because she was so nice to him all week, bringing him homemade chocolate cake and all. But when she passed away a couple of years ago, it was in her jewelry box. Sadly I was not as concientous about keeping track of it as she was. I was selling some of her inexpensive jewelry and it somehow dissappeared. I am sad about it. But I thought you might enjoy the story.
A side note. RE: Roy Rogers. My father had a gorgeous big light grey stallion that he rode in the rodeo. He was the Drillmaster, so he led 'The Sheriff's Posse" out into the arena. But this particular horse, for some reason, had a compulsion to rear upward every time just before they began their drill event. It was quite a crowd pleaser and apparently the horse trainer that year with Roy was here saw that, and made an offer to my father to buy his horse, which he did.
As for the Rifleman, he stayed drunk the whole week that he came. Us kids were a little scared of him, and I never again watched his show on TV, feeling like he was not a likeable person.
I am lucky to have been able to meet these people as a kid. Although I am not a star struck kind of a person, at least it gives me a story or two to recall from time to time. Not much good these days when no one hardly knows who you are even talking about. My son, years ago, said "Lone Ranger, who?" So I just thought that it might be an interesting anecdote to you. I understand needing to get out from under the time it takes to set up and deal with this site, so I wish you luck, and thank you for your interest in The Lone Ranger.
If it is true there is actually a movie coming out about it, I will look forward to seeing it.
If Johnny Depp is Tonto, then it may likely have a bit of oomedy to it, and perhaps his voice part in the new movie Rango, will set the stage for his 'western' flare. But come-on George Clooney as the Ranger? I can't picture it.
Have a good day.
